Medical Myths we must forget

Posted by Admin Saturday, 11 September 2010

These myths are often hard to remove from our beliefs so I guess I have to re post it again for the benefits of many who may have forgotten it... again.
This research was conducted a couple of  years ago by Aaron Carrol, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Regenstrief Institute, Indianapolis and Rachel Vreeman, fellow in children's health services research at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Despite frequent mentions in the popular press of the need to drink eight glass of water, they found no scientific basis for the claim. The complete lack of evidence has been in a study published the American Journal of Psychology, they said. The other six myths are:

Reading in dim lights ruins your eyesight- The majority of eye experts believe it is unlikely to do any permanent damage, but it make you squint, blink more and have trouble focusing, the researchers said.

Shaving makes hair grow back faster or coarser- It has no effect on the thickness or rate of hair regrowth, studies say. But stubble lacks the finer taper of unshaven hair, giving the impression.

Eating turkey makes you drowsy. It does contain Amino acid called tryptophan that is involved in sleep and mood control. But turkey has no more of the acid than chicken and minced beef. Eating lots of food and drink at Christmas are probably the real cause of sleepiness.

We use only 10 percent of our brains. This myth arose as early 1907 but imaging shows no area of the brain is silent or completely inactive.

Hair and fingernails continue to grow after death(mom, read this)- This idea may stem from ghoulish novels. The researchers said the skin dries out and retracts after death, giving the appearance of longer hair and nails.

Mobile phones are dangerous in hospitals- despite widespread concerns, studies have found minimal interference with medical equipment.

Dietary supplements: 5 signs of false claims

Posted by Admin Monday, 12 January 2009

Image via WikipediaThere are many food supplements and dietary supplements out there in the market, and you don't know what to choose and what product is telling the truth ,or they just telling some "good to hear" claims about there product to make there product sell. While some food and dietary supplements have been documented, those of other supplements have not been proven. There are five signs of false claims:

  • Personal testimonials by consumers or doctors claiming amazing results. For example " My wife has Alzheimer's. She began eating a teaspoonful of this product each day. And now in just 22 days, She remember now every member of our family; we take our morning walk together."

  • Promotions use words like "scientific breakthrough," miraculous cure," "exclusive product," "secret ingredient," or "ancient remedy." For example "A scientific breakthrough formulated by using proven principles of natural health-based medical science."
  • Statements that claim the product is "totally safe," "all natural," or has "definitely no side effects."

  • Statements that suggest that the product ca treat or cure diseases. For example "Shrinks tumors" or "cures impotency." Actually this are drug claims and should not be made for dietary supplements.

  • Statement that the products is a quick and effective "cure all." For example "Extremely beneficial in treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, infections, prostate problems, ulcers, cancer, heart trouble, hardening of the arteries, and more.

Emergency Room: How to get good care in the E.R.

Posted by Admin Wednesday, 17 December 2008

If it's a life threatening emergency, such as heart attack, just call the hospital and get help fast. In less urgent situations try to do this following tips:

  • Before you go to the Emeregncy room, phone your primary-care doctor or any physician you know who's affiliated with the hospital and ask him to call ahead.
  • Bring a copy of your medical history. Bring along a relative who can speak for you.
  • The first person you'll meet at the emergency room is the triage nurse, who decides how quickly you need to be seen. No matter when your problem actually started, never say more than four hours ago, it will seem less pressing. (but tell the doctor exactly when symptoms began.)
  • If you need any procedure, don't assume you have to use the physician on call. Ask your own doctor to call in a specialist.
